depth and height
Journeyed today from the lowest point on earth (400m / 1330ft below sea level) up to one of the higher points in Jordan beside Petra (1200m / 3900ft above sea level). The landscape we have travelled through has varied tremendously from fertile agricultural land, to desert, from salt factories to Bedouin villages, and from a Crusader fort to an ancient civilization's tombs. The land is very dry, and rather too warm for the time of year: this helps as a tourist to the detriment of the locals. The fort of Shawbak had steps going down into tunnels which served as secret exits and entrances, clambered down one for a hundred feet -- next time I'm going to go all the way, apparently you pop out at the bottom of the fort's impregnable hill top.
