Index to Collects and Post Communions: Redub / Children's Reboot

This is the index of my Green Prayers which I introduce here. The prayers are either my redubs or my reboots of Church of England prayers that are called "Collects" or "Post Communions".

Below is a week by week list of all of my Collects and Post Communions published for each Sunday of the Church year and principal feast days. The prayers for August to November are still being written.

This alternative prayers project was begun at the start of December 2012 and is continuing.

Introduction: Redubbing and Rebooting Collects for a Year

Welcome to my redubbed and rebooted Collects and Post Communion prayers.

I am redubbing existing Collects and Post Communions.

I am rebooting by starting again for children.

I always start with Common Worship.

I build an index as I go along.

There are many existing prayers in the category "Collects and Post Communions" that are inaccessible or unintelligible to some or many for a variety of reasons (note my January 2017 letter to the Church Times on that topic).

I've been writing 5 prayers for each Sunday. I'm going to also write 4 or 5 prayers for Principal Feasts and Holy Days. I've done two-thirds of the Church year, with prayers left to be written for August to November. The project began in December 2012 and after I have written five prayers for all Sundays and Principal Feasts—that's about 70 sets of five prayers that run across the year—I also hope to write 2 prayers for some Lesser Festivals too.

I have a pre-occupation with liberation theologies. I'm particularly concerned about environment, women and children. I wrote a PhD on ecotheology and Common Worship: here.

Post Communion, Fourth Sunday of Advent (Redub)

Loving God, holy parent to us all,

you called Mary  to be a holy mother.

She embraced her child, Jesus,

first in her womb and then in her arms.

May we receive your love and

bring it to the world around us.

God, beyond all worlds,

God within all worlds;

in Mary’s labouring to bring her child to birth,

we see the struggle involved in bringing

your rule of justice and peace.

Remind us, in the agony of our longing,

of the ecstasy of the new creation.

God our provider,

you gave to Mary many measures of joy,

in bearing Jesus and bringing him to birth.

Help us learn from her waiting and labouring,

her loving and sorrowing.

Equip us to carry the measures of

joy and sorrow that visit us.

Alert us to your presence within and all around.

Amen.

God it is you we watch for, you we wait for.

You sent John the Baptist

to prepare the way for Jesus, the Christ.

Like John, give us courage to hunger for justice.

May we desire your freedom.

Help us to bring the liberty of heaven to earth.

God of love you are strong,

even when we are weak.

We are travelling towards you,

but you are rushing towards us,

and racing to rescue the earth.

Even when your freedom

seems a long way off, remind us that

your love is stronger than anything.

Collect, First Sunday of Advent (Children's Reboot)

God you are strong. You are gentle.

We think your love is like a sunrise.

Thank you that Jesus is like the brightest sun.

Help us be like little lights.

Help us shine brightly too.

Amen.

This Collect could be used as the Post Communion on any day from the Second Sunday of Advent until Christmas Eve instead of the Post Communion provided.

Post Communion, First Sunday of Advent (Redub)

O God, our God, help us be patient

as we hunger for your freedom.

Keep us hoping for the joy we cannot see or feel

as we wait for this Christmas

and long for the arrival of your new creation.

While it is still night, sustain our wait for liberty,

so that, as soon as the love of Jesus dawns on us,

we will be ready to receive you.
Help us be ready too, to bring your love to the world,

both now and forever. Amen.

God of all things and all people,  give us grace

to throw off that which diminishes  and

put on the clothes of eternal peace instead.

May we begin this,  now,

in the time of our earthly lives.

We would like to be like Jesus, the Christ,

who came and lived with us, plainly and simply.

When, at the last,  Christ makes a glorious return,

with mercy and love, may we come alive,
in God, in the new creation.
