Mary is just back from New Zealand after a good long stint over there, maybe three years in total. There's a celebration weekend here in York for her return. She and I played in the St John College orchestra together way back when. Helen and Miles bought her and me tickets to go with them to hear Eddi Reader last night -- what a treat (Miles said it was a thank you for Jerusalem -- I was very chuffed)! And ... and ... John McCusker was playing with Eddi, his lightness of touch impresses me (John's married to Kate Rusby, plays with loads of people including Kate and Eddi and produces Kate's stuff). It was a fantastic gig, at the York Opera House (far cry from the Sydney Opera House gig of a fortnight previous).
The focus was Robbie Burns stuff. There was the most amazing rendition of 'Auld Lang Syne' just while Eddi looked like she was tuning her guitar! Other highlights for me were 'My Love is But a Red Rose', and of course 'Patience of Angels' and 'You're Welcome Willie Stewart'.
